Travel Tips

  • Wear comfortable, warm clothing (at least three layers, as it gets cold at high altitude).
  • Acclimatize before visiting the Colca Canyon, located between 3,500 and 4,900 meters above sea level.
  • If you are coming from a lower altitude city, spend at least one night in Arequipa before the tour to adjust properly.
  • Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water to help prevent altitude sickness.
  • Get a good night’s rest in Chivay so you have enough energy for the second day, which is usually the highlight of the trip (Cruz del Cóndor).
  • Bring your swimsuit in a small backpack if you plan to relax in the hot springs on the first afternoon.
  • Respect the local wildlife and nature, and avoid getting too close to condors, alpacas, or vizcachas.
  • Support local communities by purchasing handmade crafts from Colca artisans.
  • Wear sturdy shoes suitable for uneven terrain, especially for walking to Pillones Waterfalls and the Stone Forest.
  • Apply sunscreen and wear a hat and sunglasses to protect against strong high-altitude sun.
  • Carry a small backpack with snacks, water, and essentials for comfort during hikes.
  • Take care on slippery or rocky paths, and follow the guide’s instructions at all times.
  • Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the incredible landscapes along the route.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

The difficulty is moderate. The trail involves walking on uneven rocky and sandy terrain. It is recommended for travelers with good physical condition, preferably up to 60 years old, due to the effort required for the descent and ascent at high altitude.

Condor sightings at the Cruz del Condor viewpoint usually happen between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. Our itinerary is timed to arrive early, taking advantage of the thermal updrafts that allow these giant birds to glide close to visitors.

We will reach 4,910 m (16,108 ft). We recommend acclimatizing in Arequipa for at least one night before the tour. During the trip, stay hydrated, avoid heavy meals, and drink the coca tea provided at our stops.

Dress in layers. Mornings are freezing (below 0°C), but the sun is very strong at noon. Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, apply sunscreen, and bring a swimsuit for the La Calera hot springs.

The tour includes breakfast on Day 2. Other lunches and dinners are not included, allowing you to explore the local cuisine in Chivay and Imata according to your preference and budget.
